CBS News has learned that the family of the octuplets born this week outside Los Angeles filed for bankruptcy and abandoned a home a little over a year-and-a-half ago.
Early Show national correspondent Hattie Kauffman says the mother is in her mid-thirties and lives with her parents.
There's been no mention of the octuplets' father, Kauffman observes.
The grandfather, she adds, is apparently going to head back to his native Iraq to earn money for the growing family. He told CBS News he's a former Iraqi military man.
Kauffman reported Thursday, and the octuplets' maternal grandmother now confirms to the Los Angeles Times, that the babies' mother already had six young children.

The woman and her children live on a cul-de-sac with her parents.
A man who came to the door of the family home confirmed to Kauffman that he's the grandfather of the octuplets, but refused to speak to her.
"From what you know about this family, and this household, do you think they'll be able to support 14 kids?" Kauffman asked the acquaintance.
"Well," she responded, "so far, they've been fine with the six they have. Fourteen I don't know."
Kauffman says the neighborhood has homes with just two or three bedrooms.
It will, Kauffman concluded, "be tight!"


This is ridiculous IMO. 14 children living in a 3 bedroom home with no father- and these circumstances were assisted by medical intervention?!

Many of these facts are the same ones I've seen. From the pictures of the parents home it is obvious they do not have money. Love is more important than money but somehow you need to be able to support your children both financially and emotionally. I do not understand why someone with children already, whether conceived naturally or not, needs more children when it's obvious they cannot financially support the ones they have. And...who ever made the decision to implant 8 embryos needs to be under investigation. That is irresponsible to both the babies and the mothers health. My guess is that with some of the very low birth weights these babies may very well have some life long health issues. Birth defects can happen to anyone but the risk increases with multiple births as in this case. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the mother's reasoning was for have fertility treatments and the fertility centers reason for implanting so many.

Another thought of mine is comparing this situation to the other family. They did not bear all of these children. Most are adopted and have health issues. I have to give them "kudos" for taking these children under their roof and giving them what is probably a much better life life than what they had before. From the reports I've seen the kids all seem very happy and well adjusted. I don't know how they do it but I certainly admire them for the love they've given these kids.
