Some pups ... esp ones that have some anxiety problems
like yours who you said is "clingy"
and many times these problems turn into fears
Children
Cars
sudden noises
They need to be taken care of via desensitization techniques
where you slowly introduce what they are afraid of along with treats and positive reinforcement so that they know that good things will happen whenever in your case a child is around
But you need to do it SLOWLY or it will be bound to fail
first have a child stand and not react a few yards away or a distance where you know you dog will not react but so he can see the child
Give him his favorite treats and tell him what a good dog he is
another time do it closer
but always make sure the child is not reacting or even looking at the dog
do the samething in your home
have the child just enter your house
best if he is looking away from your dog
and with each session bring the child closer and closer
Only when the child is within reaching distance do you have him react with the dog
I know this seems like a lot of work but this is what a good trainer will do for you
for deep seated fears there really is no other way
