The family that has 17 is self supporting and needs no hand outs from anyone else to take care of their children. So in that situation it's about preference.
When you live at home with your parents with six children and no support then that is a problem.
I don't think that anyone in this thread said that you have to have a husband and live in your own house. There are times when family dynamics change due to divorce or death but trying to singly raise six children is not a one person job and then to add another eight is a bit much. If she were ok financially I am sure she wouldn't be living at home with her parents.
