I'm old...when I was growing up, little girls learned to sew as a matter of course. We were even required to take a sewing class in school!
I started when I was about 7, embroidering dish towels as an activity to keep me occupied while the adults were busy. Then I was allowed to make doll clothes on my grandmother's treadle machine (the theory was that I couldnt' get that treadle going fast enough to hurt myself!).
I've done the layettes for my babies, and my daughter was a teen during the Gunne Sax craze...couldn't afford to buy them, so I made them.
And now I have a new baby coming to sew for, just tinier and hairier than the first batch!
