Mine are, admittedly, completely irrational. The first time I had one in my pool I was completely hysterical by the time my husband could get away from work and come home and fetch it out. These snakes are harmless, fully grown about 5-6 inches and the diameter of an earthworm- not one of my prouder moments.

I don't hate them enough to have my husband kill them, I just don't want them coming into the screened area. I think it's the slithering that creeps me out.

ETA- My daughter's bf has 3 snakes. She had dinner at his house last weekend for the first time and I did act completely fascinated in his snakes to give me an excuse to talk more with his mother.
