I found this online:

Squirrels are pulling bark off my redwood trees. Will this harm the tree?

Unfortunately, tree squirrels strip bark from trees in order to feed on the cambium layer. This can cause the death of the tree if the damage is extensive, but this usually does not happen.

On small trees, you can cover the stripped areas with 1-inch mesh poultry netting.

For additional information on the behavior and management of squirrels, send a self-addressed, stamped 42-cent business-sized envelope to PN 74122, UC Cooperative Extension, 4145 Branch Center Road, Sacramento, CA 95827.

I'm going to keep searching around...any one else have experience with this?
