Lightbulb A few questions for the experienced...

Hi all,

My husband and I just got married, and moved into a really awesome pet accommodating apartment complex. Most of my neighbors have pets, and we always wanted a Yorkie-- so now we are really looking into it.

I just have a few questions-- He is a grad student and has classes from 10-2:30 everyday. And I work from 2-8 PM every weekday. We both have weekends off and are very outdoorsy people. I am just wondering about the well being of the puppy for the hour that either of us aren't home. I was thinking I could take the puppy for a walk right before I leave for work, fill the dishes with plenty of water and food until my husband gets home and plays with him. Is that a good idea? How long is long enough to keep a puppy home alone?

Also, I have pretty valuable antique rugs in my home and I am afraid of the puppy going peepee or making them dirty? Am I over reacting? Is this something that I can train the puppy not to do overtime and not worry about accidents?

I do appreciate all the help I can get.

Thanks a bunch.
