With only one litter to my record, I'm no expert, but I highly recommend adding the whelping pudding in with her puppy food as as well. I used a whelping pudding recipe with my female; just a spoonful mixed with each feeding, for at least a month while she was nursing.....and she only had four puppies. I think the concern about over supplementing calcium is bigger PRIOR to having puppies. To much supplementing before hand could cause their system to think it does not have to make so much on it's own, causing a shortage of calcium, thus bringing on eclampsia. But after the pups are born, they may need it to replenish what the pups are taking while nursing.
