There are some carpet cleaning systems that use some pretty potent stuff. Some brands have petroleum-based cleaners, and there is no way you would want a dog near this. Usually the petroleum-based cleaners are using a "dry" method of cleaning, similar to dry cleaning. The typical steam cleaner uses a cleaning system that is mainly hot steamy water pushed through the fibers and then sucked out again. The cleaning additive sounds very safe, and there are even pet formulas that don't say anything about removing pets or the product being unsafe for pets. I use the Bissell Proheat and really like it. It's extremely quite, much quieter than the vacuum and Joey doesn't mind at all when it's being used.
