I had my Yorkie, Truman for about 2 years before we had kids. After we had children they learned from the start what was okay, and what wasn't. We now have 5 Yorkies and my kids are ages 11, 9, and 7. I do have to say that if a child has never been around a small dog, I would be uncomfortable starting them out with a Yorkie. When my kids bring friends over that have never been around small dogs, I have to watch them like a hawk because they are always trying to pick them up and squeeze them really tightly.
