As states are passing more laws raising kennel conditions, the AKC has more power to suspend breeders who break state laws. These breeders have to go somewhere and many are going to the alternative registries. Any breeder can list with the alternative registries, and you do not have to prove you had breeding rights, and you cannot refuse breeding rights to a new owner. This really is a bad situation. Here's some information about APRI:

Unless, you feel like there is some reason that you would like to support APRI, there is really no purpose for registering your dog with them. You are just supporting commercial breeders, also known as puppy mills.
May I ask a question on this? I have Bentley. He came with AKC papers. He is a pet quality dog which is exactly what I wanted. I have no intentions of breeding him and actually just put his papers to the side and was not going to send them in. If I do not plan to breed him, why do you recommend registering him? I can...that is not a problem. I just figured why? Can you help me understand?

Thx!
