Are you planning on breeding? I always recommend that someone register their dog with the AKC if illegible even if they aren't planning on breeding and showing. The AKC has strict requirements for registration, and is the only registry that does regular unannounced inspections. I believe it's also the only registry that has a suspension list. As states are passing more laws raising kennel conditions, the AKC has more power to suspend breeders who break state laws. These breeders have to go somewhere and many are going to the alternative registries. Any breeder can list with the alternative registries, and you do not have to prove you had breeding rights, and you cannot refuse breeding rights to a new owner. This really is a bad situation. Unless, you feel like there is some reason that you would like to support APRI, there is really no purpose for registering your dog with them. You are just supporting commercial breeders, also known as puppy mills.
