Yes, maybe combining several expens to make a large temporary area for them would be good.
I don't like the idea of electric fences either. But even if you did use one that wouldn't stop a bigger dog from coming in and attacking your dogs.
Also if your dog happened to go out of the perimeter and get shocked then they wouldn't come back in for fear of being shocked again.
