I personally love Golden Retrievers BUT there is a dog that is hypoallergenic and big. It's a Portuguese Water Dog. They are AMAZING in person. Some of the pictures online make them look kind of weird because of their hair cut, but they are really pretty and are gentle even as puppies. My friend has one.
Oh btw, I think ANY dog no matter what the size or breed would try to protect it's owner if it felt necessary.
