If you are not planning to show or breed your dog, the registration is only good for bragging rights.

If you are planning to show or breed your dog, then the registration is necessary. You can breed an unregistered dog, but the cost of raising a litter remains static while the unregistered puppies sell for much less.

I prefer to buy from show breeders. Not because I am particularly interested in showing, but because show breeders pay very close attention to conformation in choosing mates, and will likely have given the dam and pups the utmost in care, resulting in the healthiest babies. Home breeders may breed with love and care for their animals as well, but when breeding for show, there is also a lot of science that goes into the choices made.

My experience comes from non-Yorkies, but I expect it applies to Yorkies as well.
