I believe different dogs have different levels of testosterone, though of course it is strongly affected by "fixing." That's why some female dogs mark, and some male dogs never do. I agree with others that it can be about sex and/or dominance.
It grosses me out personally, so I'm very greatful Thor doesn't hump. Though I guess I couldn't complain if he was in a monogamous relationship with one stuffed toy and discreet.
