When we first got Carter, he mastered climbing over a baby gate that was about 24" tall. When we got our x-pen, I got one that is 36" tall and neither he nor Cooper have ever scaled it - thank goodness. I made sure I purchased one that has a top that can be purchased separately, in the event that they would learn to climb over it but I didn't have to worry about it.
My x-pen has a door so they can go in and out of it when it is up.
