Yes, there is a connection
. Most often, it's linked to foods that dogs' systems can't digest well like corn, fillers, grains - so the undigested food in the poo still smells like food.
There are better foods out there, imo. Like Orijen, Wellness CORE, Innova EVO, Nature's Variety Instinct (not the rabbit).
Do you have a premium pet food store near you? Or, only Petsmart/Petco?
