The vet will do all the necessary blood work, etc prior to the procedure. And your vet will tell you if he is ready for the procedure or not....my little guy was almost 5 years when I had him done!!!!
I asked my vet to use the safest gas (iso?) and the smallest trach tube.

Mojo has not gained weight and it has been over a year. Mojo was sooo happy when I picked him up...I got ot get him an hour after surgery (due to the fact that my vet knows me soo well), but expect him to stay over night. Mojo was groggy when I brought him home, but by the next day, he was back to normal. AND the day I picked him up, it was like nothing had happened to him.

If you are like me...you worry and then cancel appts..etc...but don't....it is something that really needs to be done.
