Default Pre-op or not?

Pasquale is almost 8 months old. So yesterday i called his vet to make an appointment for his neuter. He also has a few baby teeth that havent come out so he has to have those removed also. Well when i called i expected the receptionist to say Pasquale needed to come in for a pre-op. Well she didnt mention it. So i did. She said "hold on lemme ask the vet if you need one". Well she came back saying the vet said we didnt need one. I'm totally uncomfortable with just bringing my baby in for surgery without the doctor examining him first. Am i wrong to think this? Am i overreacting? For those of you that had your baby's spayed/neutered already....did you all have a pre-op visit beforehand?
