He is scared and confused. He probably feels somewhat abandoned by your ex being gone and he now fears you leaving also. IMO your crate is too big. It should be just big enough to stand up, turn around, lay down, and have food and water and a toy or too. There should be no room in there to pee or poo. Dogs naturally don't want to soil their den. Your crate is a mansion rather than a den.
