I think it's a hit or miss with labradoodles, because labs DEFINITELY shed, but poodles don't. So there's no way to know for sure if the dog will shed.
I think the portugese water dog is a good idea!
They said that they'll look until they find their dog, so I don't think they're in a big hurry.
