Something similar happened to my Madison over the weekend. I had taken him to the groomer's and for some reason, they left one nail on each foot REALLY long. One of them had torn off down to the quick and I saw Madison running around with one of his hind legs up...I wasn't sure if his hip or his leg was hurting him or if he'd done something while he was outside, so I checked his entire leg and foot and found the torn nail.
Naturally, it was on a weekend and it really was hurting him. I finally got some really sharp scissors and very gently cut off what was left. You could tell that it was very sensitive even afterward, (he didn't make a peep or a move while I cut it off thank goodness), but it was too close to the pad to be able to wrap anything around. I was concerned about it possibly getting infected, so I gently cleaned it with some hydrogen peroxide and then put some cornstarch on it to hopefully help it dry up a little and heal.

I think the main concern would be infection, but if he's favoring it, it's probably b/c it's tender and sensitive..can you clip off part of it so it's not putting so much pressure on the affected area?
