Yes, you should grind it into a powder. I always grind it very fine then pour it in a colander/strainer to get out any bigger pieces. I grind up several cups at a time and put it in an air tight container so I can just add to their bowl as needed. I find the small double sided bowls they sell at Wal-mart work the best. I put the food in both sides of the bowl and I put out another bowl for the water. You don't have to worry about them choking. They will just lick the ground up food.
