We got Boo as a rescue when he was 5 yrs old. He was very uncertain and shy about nearly everything. We just sort of left him on his own for the first several days. Talking to him, making a big deal of good behavior, letting him go and come and stay wherever he wanted. Always encouraged him to come sit with us, had lots of treats available for when he did. And Annie worked her magic on him and he was soon very smitten with her. He was still shy in 'new' surroundings, but we always paid attention to his stress level and showed him we were watching out for the pack and he really came out of his shell then. All in all, I'd say it took about 6 months for him to stop worrying about 'things'. He still has an aversion to loud noises, but again, we just realize that and always announce when something loud is going to happen. This really seems to help him to not be startled by the noise.
