I kept Zada in a ex-pen attached to the front of her wire crate, and put a pee-pad at the opposite end. I put a blanket over the crate and bedding inside the crate. I took her outside every hour for potty and play, but if she needed to go potty during the time in the ex-pen, she went on the pad. I didn't have to "pad-train" because she knew to go on it anyway. If they piddle on the floor instead of the pad, just take a tissue and dab a bit of the pee then blot it on the pad. I still use pads at night, for traveling, motels and raining days. They all use the pad if they can't get out. It's such a blessing. I'm not sure how that works for boy pups if they lift their legs though.
