See I actually thought the balloon knot was pretty easy. But they were about 5' long. I believe if you go shorter than that you will have a tough time with the balloon knot. The instructions on the 48x60 that I did actually stated to do a 7x7. This would probably make the balloon knot much easier on a blanket this size.
When I get my other fabric I am going to try the shoelace knot to see how I like it.
