Hi Melissa,
I just saw your post. I'm so sorry that Princeton had to be hospitalized! After Meg came home from the hospital, she didn't want to eat any hard kibble food, even when I wet it down with water. She loves *very* tiny diced chicken (boiled) and crumbled egg yolk (I hardboiled the eggs). She ate some plain yogurt at first, but doesn't seem to want it anymore. Sometimes I give her a few tiny pieces of hard cheddar cheese and it really seems to get her hungry. She won't eat more than two or three pieces, but then she wants to eat her food. I also bought (but haven't tried): baby food, applesauce, PediaLite, Cesar's wet food, etc.
Did your vet send you home with any Clini-Care? It's a high calorie/nutrient (and sugar) liquid that can help wet the appetite and get food in Princeton. You can mix it in with other food or serve on its own.
All Meg at on her first day or so home was diced chicken and Clini-Care.
Okay, for food --- the only dog foods Meg really seem to love are:
1) The Honest Kitchen (dehydrated food that you add water to, and can add chicken, etc, or feed plain). You can get it as specialty health food stores or pet stores. She LOVES the "Embark" formula.
2) Newman's Own Turkey and Chicken wet dog food, which I found at the grocery store. It's much, much softer than the IAM's the vet sent her home with, and looks much more palatable. She barely touched teh IAMS after she'd tried the Newman's Own.
I'm so sorry you're going through this. Keep your chin up, and just get Princeton to eat ... anything! I don't know much about liver shunts, but I think it's important that he gets good nutrition in his system. I'm praying for you both! Keep me posted on how he's doing.
