I'm sorry to disagree with you, but your sister in law....has been LUCKY. Any coyote that has a food supply run low, is going to come to your back porch if necessary and eat your pup or your cat.
I had a coyote come and tear my kitty apart. I also have seen and read reports of coyotes snatching small dogs and cats and killing and eating them.
I don't want to alarm you, but if you value your animal you would do best to understand that coyotes and large predatory animals ( eagles, owls etc ) WILL come into your yard..they will kill and eat your babies.
I'm so not joking here. I would not want you to experience the heartache you would endure if this should happen.
