I think most people consider the first sign of blood the start of the heat cycle. Some females bleed a lot less than others and some females also keep themselves very clean so it could be easy to miss the first day or so of a heat cycle. I usually like to introduce the female to the male on the 9th day from the first sign of blood. Some females are ready at that point and some are not. I have had some females not accept a male until the 11th or 12th day of their heat cycle.
