I don't recall having a hard time keeping the fringes straight. I just freehand cut the squares, but it kind of helped that on my last two blankets I made, my backside material was plaid. When I cut the fringes, I just use the scissors as my guide and kind of eyeball the length as I go. Sometimes if I get one too short, I go back and snip it a little longer. I usually do all my cutting at once, then all my tying.
On the squares, I try to cut at least one as straight as I can, and then use the scrap as a guide for the other corners.
I wish I had one of those big cutting tables like they have at the fabric stores. It would be SO much easier. lol
