I used both. I think the chip is a great thing, most shelters check automatically for them, so it is a great safety measure. When the vet chipped Pepper she didn't even make a sound. I will have my daughter's Shih Tzu puppy chipped as soon as possible, the vet said she is too little now, he will do it during the spay.

Pepper always wore a harness and her ID tag and license were on the back D ring, so she never could reach them, or seemed bothered by them. I miss hearing them jingle.
