Let the furkids be your guide. If kitty gets fed up with puppy, kitty will learn quickly to live "up", up out of reach of the dog. I was amazed at how well my dogs and cats get along. My boy cats get along great with my girl dogs. My girl cats could care less and act like the dogs are not even here. It sounds like you have a real sweetie in that cat. I say go for it, I suspect they will quickly become friends.
