I understand what you are saying. My initial thought was if it isn't safe for your dog, don't put him up there. Our bed is also very high and we would never allow her to sleep with us because of this -- and we have soft cushy carpet!
We are definitely crazy about our yorkie and she is as spoiled as can be... but we are the alpha dog in this house.
