Oh, it's so easy to do! You should be able to do it fine even if you don't have ear powder as long as your hands aren't oily. I never buy the powder, I'm a cheap-o. Just grab some hair with you fingers and pull! It won't hurt them. If it's never been done, it'll at most scare them. Just don't pull all of it at once. You'll be amazed at how easily it comes out.

Probably about once a month is plenty often to pluck. But I just look; I don't keep track of time. There's a huge difference between a plucked ear and one that needs to plucked.

But this is definitely something that needs to be done especially if your yorkie has floppy ears. Not only is it good for higiene, but health as well.
