This is one of Cesar's methods for establishing dominance, we have lightened up with this as Joey has gotten older, but I do think it helps let them know you are the boss, and really important when they are young. Another easy method for establishing dominance is always making them sit before you place the food bowl down. You teach them to sit, and then have them stay until you place the food down and you give the "release" command. You keep picking the bowl up until they stay until the release command is given. They actually learn this really fast. The lesson you are trying to teach is that all food is given by the pack leaders, and they have to obey the pack leader to get food. We always do this with his food, and if other dogs are around it keeps him from getting aggressive with his food bowl.
