Up until today, he even seemed pretty scared of the bell, and hadn't really done anything to let us know he wanted out otherwise, except for maybe walk over by the door for a second then walk back (highly questionable as a signal).

Just be consistent, and don't give up or slack off. We were about to call it quits on the bell since he always seemed so scared of it... but then suddenly today happened! So yeah, just keep at it...! Congratulations on your new little one. :-)
