it usually lasts for 3 weeks, however every dog is different! Fiona was only spotting for the first week and a half. I went to PetSmart and got her a re-useable diaper, and got little sanitary pads for in the inside, that you change just like for us...I would leave it on for the majority of the day, except for if she was in her crate or going outside. I would not let her around any un neuterd dogs for the entire heat cycle....good luck....
