I NEVER brush mine out. Always use a metal comb and gently comb through the mats starting at the ends and working upwards in little fingerfuls of hair. Pet stores (Petco, etc) have Detangling sprays that can be sprayed directly on the mat and worked into it before combing. If she is really bad, just do sections at a time and the let her go for awhile to rest. I do it in front of the television at night with mine sitting on my lap. It is more comforting to them.
Never brush a dry dog, never try to brush out a mat. This has worked for me. Good luck.
