My trick is cornstarch, plain ordinary cornstarch works better than any dog grooming product I've ever tried to get mats to slip right out. Sprinkle some over the matted area, work out the mat with your fingers first, then brush with a pin brush. This may take awhile if the matting is as bad as you make it sound,
