I would wash him then lube him up good with a very slippery conditioner like Pantene (human conditioner) and gently brush him out with the conditioner on the coat. Use a good quality pin brush if you have one, like a Chris Christensen one. The pins on cheap brushes are not polished and can seriously scratch the skin. You could also use a slicker brush but be very careful because again it could scratch the skin if you push too hard. You may not be able to get all the matts out but if you could at least brush out the back and legs you could always shave out his armpits and belly and he will still have some coat left.
