If you have someone to help it is much more manageable. Let your helper hold the dog and distract with a treat. If you have a small piece of old panty hose it is very handy. Stretch it tight and push the nails through, then pull it around the leg and it will hold the hair back out of the way. If you trim only that portion of the nail that is turned down you won't hit the quick. If the nail has grown quite long you can use the dremel or a nail file to remove the outer coating all the way around the nail back a little further than you cut. This will cause the quick to recede and allow closer trimming of the nail in a few days.
