My Bailey doesn't like being picked up - she's quite independent. In the beginning, she'd run when I bent over to pick her up.

So, I made it a point to bend over to pet and release (no pick up). Then, to train her to pick up - I said "stop" very firmly, she'd freeze, then I picked her up - quickly followed by praise and a treat. After a month of treats, I began to lessen them until no more treats for the pick up.

Hmmm - your issue is that you get bad behavior when you try to correct. I'm no expert -but I am a good pack leader. Along with praise and treats for good behavior - I believe in firmness when there is bad behavior - therefore, I wouldn't hesitate in physically pinning the dog, simultaneously say "no" along with direct eye contact. You're the boss - don't let the puppy get the last word.

Good luck!!!
