There have been some studies suggesting that giving calcium supplements during pregnancy can induce eclampsia.

When you give a supplement the body, (sensing abundant amounts) slows down the process of making it on its own. So giving calcium supplements prior to whelp can lower the dams natural ability to absorb it.

I will give calcium to a lactating bitch if she has a large litter or I see any sign of eclampsia coming on.

I am speaking of things like tums or actual calcium tablets. Not adding natural foods to the diet.
