But seriously, I'm stunned at how great these animals are, and they are often gorgeous as well. It blows my mind that these animals, which end up being fabulous pets, almost lost their lives.

- In these rough economic times, many more animals are abandoned simply because people cannot afford to care for them.

- On a more positive note, if you rescue an animal, it is more of a known quantity. The shelter will be up front with you about any issues it's observed, and will probably ask your entire family to meet the dog to ensure a good match.
