While this is a subject full of controversy because reactions are dose dependent and small amounts mean no reaction (we hope), garlic is in the same family as onion. Onion can cause hemolytic anemia (horrible to deal with). This is true less so for garlic and it has also been blamed on asthmatic attacks and dermatitis. A large amount one time or small amounts over time are the big issue. One small treat with garlic a couple times a year I would guess wouldn't do any harm... I would try to avoid it altogether. It just isn't worth the risk.
