I don't know for sure what the best way to do it is, but here's what my vet told me:

If the puppy's stools look good and you get a fecal exam and it comes back negative, go ahead and start interceptor or whatever - no need to de-worm if there are no worms or parasites!. If it comes back positive for something, hold off starting the interceptor, and get ready for poop to rule your life for awhile until your dog's healthy again. then start the interceptor. :-)
