Down here in North Carolina we have to use a flea preventative. The fleas are bad year round. Even people who have indoor cats only have to use flea treatments and they come right in through the screens or hitchhike on your legs.
When I lived up in New York I never had to use flea treatments all the time, but we had a terrible problem with ticks up there. You can't win.
