There is still a risk with the new vaccine. The only difference is the new vaccine works on several different strains of the disease so it's more effective than the old one.

Cases of Leptospirosis are on the rise and if there has been an outbreak in your area, that may be why your vet is recommending it. Ask to be sure.

The only safe way to vaccinate is to get a single dose of the vaccine that is not included in a combination shot and vaccinate several weeks after any other vaccines. You most likely will have to buy the vaccine yourself (Revival Pet has it) and take it to your vet to be administered.

Reaction to the lepto vaccine rarely occurs with the first shot. It is usually with the second or third shot when antibodies have built up, so you will always have to be very careful with boosters.
