I got my Brandy at 6 weeks from a BYB. I didn't know any better and didn't discover this web site until after I got her. She is a great little dog with no health problems so I guess I got lucky. One thing to consider though, the breeder is avoiding vet costs by giving you the puppy so young. A dog that leaves the mom at 12 weeks has most likely had all its shots. This 6 week old puppy will still need all its shots so the couple hundred bucks saved by buying from an inexperienced BYB will quickly be spent getting it's shots anyway. Basically I'm saying that this $800 puppy could cost more with the additional vet expenses even if it has no issues than a $1200 12 week old puppy purchased from an experienced breeder. My little Brandy worked out fine and I wouldn't trade her for the world but had I known then what I know now I would have done things a bit differently.
